There is still a lot lot to learn about this fishery and therefore also about flies. We will obviously update you on our latest thoughts on effective patterns before you go. What we can tell already is that your normal tarpon patterns might not always work that well. Big flashy baitfish flies or shrimp flies is so far what works best on these jungle poons.
No matter which pattern you fish you must choose the best hooks you can find – remember you are fishing heavy leaders and applying a lot of pressure on your hook. It’s a matter of personal taste and opinion; we like the Varivas 2600V (the High Carbon version) a lot, others prefer Owner AKI, various Gamakatsus or Tiemco 600SP.
BAITFISH PATTERNS: When the tarpon are chasing mullets on the surface a baitfish pattern will work. We prefer light colored or white patterns but if the water is a little colored darker patterns can work well, too. The flies can be bulky but shouldn’t be too long as even very big fish are sometimes just nipping the tail of the fly. Around 15-18 cm (6-7 inches) is the longest we use. Hook size 3/0-6/0 (depending on hook model).
SHRIMP PATTERNS: Shrimp patterns can work extremely well in the clear waters of the lagoons, when the rivers are clearing or even in more colored water if the fish er eating shrimps instead of baitfish.
